The Need

Did you know that most people in Africa share a Bible with 200-500 other people? Seems extreme, right? But it’s the truth. In 2018, a few people felt God’s calling to bring Bibles to Africa. So, in short they did. They found that many believers have never owned a Bible, that believers of Jesus Christ have been fasting and praying for the Word of God for decades. Even the pastors do not own Bibles, they learned that some walk several days journey to copy a passage to bring back to their fellowships.

Equipped with this knowledge, Bible running began. Informal at first. 50 Bibles here, 25 there. But the word started to spread that people were being given Bibles. An amazing thing was happening, and before those original Bible Runners knew they were “Bible Runners” the ministry was started.

In 2019 more Jesus followers joined the team of “Runners” and the runs became more frequent and with a lot more financial backing by our “Senders”. What was 50 Bible here turned into 500 or 25 there was now 250! Project Bible Runners came into being in May 2019. Since May, Bible requests are received every week. At the end of December 2019, the word of giving out Bibles has spread to 15 different nations in 51 languages!

3 Promises

  1. Promise to read their Bible everyday for the rest of their lives. (They usually laugh at us - like “duh! we’ve only been fasting and praying for years for a Bible!”

  2. Promise to obey what the Bible says, even if it goes against culture or church traditions.

  3. Promise to share the gospel with their loved ones. Reading it to the young, teaching to the elderly and sharing their faith with those they meet along the way.

Hand Delivered

This is a question we get a lot. Why, do you hand deliver the Bibles - why not ship them, send money, or have them download to a phone? Here’s why:

  1. Sending money can be a temptation. Think about it, if you received 5 years worth of wages that would dramatically improve your families life, status, health etc. What might you be tempted to do?

  2. We put a target on the receivers back, so to speak. Word gets around quickly when someone receives a lot of money - its like winning the lotto. So, while the receiver may not be tempted to use it for personal gain - others around him or her may be willing to do whatever it takes to get their hands on the money.

  3. Not everyone has a phone. If they do, more than likely its mostly for taking pictures with an occasional phone call. Most people we bring Bibles to live in remote areas - having a working cell phone is not important in their culture. And honestly, how do you prefer to read the Word of God? Here at Project Bible Runners (PBR) unanimously agreed that we prefer to read it in book form.
